Soy Frequently Asked Questions
What information do I need to supply?
The type of information 3Keel will request will depend on the availability of information you have considering your supply chain role:
Livestock Producer / Integrated Supply Chain / Feed Buyer
- Sustainable soy commitments adopted by your company for animal feed or direct soy (e.g. commitment to zero-net deforestation soy by 2020, signatory to the Statement of Support for the Cerrado Manifesto)
- Certification status of your production sites.
- Feed consumed by retailer-relevant livestock by your company that are used in the products you supply. Data must include:
- Name of the feed supplier.
- Name of the company importing the soy to Europe (if different).
- Total tonnage of protein supplied, by type of protein. This should only be the volume that is used specifically in our products; not across your entire operations.
- Total feed used to produce relevant protein, and associated soymeal content per tonne.
- Country of origin of soymeal and sub-national origin if available (e.g. state or municipality)
- Soymeal certification status.
- Direct soy use ONLY for ALDI or Morrisons – including use of soy milk or soy lecithin.

I am having problems completing my declaration / uploading my evidence, what should I do?
If you’re having any difficulties with the online portal, you can get in touch with the 3Keel team via the live chat option at the bottom corner of the submission portal page. Just click on the speech bubble icon and type your question.
If you ask a question within UK office hours, a member of the 3Keel team will pick this up within a few minutes. If it is outside of these hours, or there is no one available to answer your question, you will be given the option to enter your email address so that someone can get back to you as soon as possible.
What is a “livestock-based” product?
Direct animal proteins – such as beef, pork, chicken – and products that use such animals in their production – such as chicken korma ready meals – are all considered livestock products. “Livestock-based” products include these proteins and extend the categorisation to other products that come from livestock (e.g. milk and eggs).
Do I need to include all livestock-based products?
This will depend on which retailers you supply according to the specific scope of their policy requirements.
For example, for some retailers for this year you will only need to report whole animal protein livestock products (e.g. chicken breasts, steak, mince, salmon, prawns, eggs, milk, cheese), while other retailers may also require you to report on products containing animal protein ingredients (e.g. chicken in a ready meal, fish in a pie, meat on a pizza, cheese in a sandwich, egg in a salad).
This however excludes proteins that are embodied in other purchased compound food products (e.g. milk chocolate in a cookie). Minor ingredients (e.g. butter in pie crust in a dessert) should be discussed with 3Keel to determine whether or not they are in scope for the retailer you are reporting to.
We don’t supply any livestock-based products or ingredients, does this mean I am out of scope?
If you are reporting for ALDI and/or Morrisons ONLY you are also being asked to report on volumes of direct soy used in your products (including soy milk, tofu, soy lecithin etc), as well as animal proteins. So if this was the case, you are still in scope for reporting.
For all other retailers, if you have no animal proteins (meat, dairy, eggs etc) in the products that you supply, you are most likely out of scope. If this is the case for your business, please get in touch on soy@3keel.com to confirm.
There are hundreds of farms that supply us. How should I get this feed information?
You should sample your suppliers to determine what their sourcing practices are for soymeal in feed. The specific number to be sampled should be agreed between 3Keel and your company to be practical within the timeframe of the questionnaire and the feasibility of collecting the information (if not known).
Do I provide details for my whole business?
Only provide data for the products that are supplied to the named retailers and markets in the declaration. If you supply multiple markets for the same retailer (e.g. UK, Germany), then you must separately declare each market.
No information should be supplied for manufacturing sites or livestock that are not supplied to the named retailers and markets. If you are not able to split out your feed or soymeal information between retailers, contact 3Keel and they will be able to develop a solution with you.
What are the information boundaries we should use for determining volumes?
All data is to be provided for retailer own-brand livestock-based products supplied between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2020. The data is relevant only to the named retailers and markets and should not relate to your overall company procurement practices.
We have multiple sites within our group producing livestock or livestock-based products. How should we report these figures?
You should only return one form to us covering all your relevant sites and operations. Where multiple persons may be reporting information, you may use the declaration internally to collect data from various parts of the business, but this information should then be consolidated into a single final form that you then send to 3Keel.
I haven’t supplied any own brand products containing animal proteins. Why are you contacting me?
If you have not supplied any of our own brand products that contain livestock-based products – neither as a raw material nor an ingredient – please declare to 3Keel that you are out of scope for this exercise. No further action will be required once you have made this declaration.
Can I access my report from last year?
You will not be able to access the information you submitted last year on the portal. If you would like to see what was reported last year, please send us an email at soy@3keel.com. Please note that the retailer scope may have changed slightly from last year.
Have retailer scopes changed since last year? If we were out of scope for a particular retailer last year, would we be out of scope this year?
This entirely depends on the retailer – most remain consistent to previous years.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are reporting for Aldi, Asda, McDonalds and/or Morrisons ONLY please report volumes of all direct soy (including tofu, soy lecithin etc) in a product as well as animal proteins. For all other retailers, please report on volumes of animal proteins (meat, dairy, eggs etc) that you supply.
Please email us at soy@3keel.com if you feel that you are out of scope.
Does this only apply to retailer own label lines or does it include branded lines too?
Retailer own-label products are only included within the scope.
How do you report if soya for a particular customer has been bought with sustainable credits?
There is space to report this on the declaration forms.
What do you enter for multiple countries of origin from a single supplier and ingredient?
Please enter all country of origins and if possible the breakdown of how much from each (%)
What are the correct units to report in?
Weight units – i.e. kgs/tonnes. Please convert all of your information into these units.
We purchase sauces containing dairy products. This would not require reporting as it is a composite, is this correct?
That’s correct – this would be classified as a compound ingredient, which would be out of scope.
For liquid milk how do you attribute a supplier to the volume when many producers’ milk will be used?
If you have lots of suppliers (and we realise that some companies may have hundreds/thousands) then we can agree a sampling approach so you can ask a set number of suppliers to get the information from. Alternatively, if you are unable to attribute volumes of milk from specific suppliers to particular retailers, then we can use a mass balance approach. This is where we would suggest applying the ratio at which source the milk from your different supplier to the final volumes you supply to the retailers. If you have any questions about what approach is right for you, please contact the team at soy@3keel.com.
For situations where both the agents and manufacturers are reporting into 3Keel, how can double counting be avoided?
As part of our data validation process, 3Keel have a process for ensuring that no double counting of volumes or certification are taking place. In order to ensure that figures are as accurate as possible, and any double counting is addressed, we ask that you give us the name of the supplier you have sourced your livestock-based proteins/ingredients from as part of your declaration.
If you have any concerns about this, or want to make us aware of any context for your business’ submission, please get in touch at soy@3keel.com.
