Amazon Soy Frequently Asked Questions
What information do I need to supply?
The type of information 3Keel will request will depend on the availability of information you have considering your supply chain role:
1.1 Livestock Producer / Integrated Supply Chain / Feed Buyer
- Sustainable soy commitments adopted by your company for animal feed/soy
- Certification status of feed production sites producing compound feed (or your own site if relevant).
- Feed consumed by company-relevant livestock that are used in the products you supply us. Data must include:
- Name of the feed supplier.
- Name of the company importing the soy to Europe (if different).
- Total tonnage of protein supplied, by type of protein. This should only be the volume that is used specifically in our products; not across your entire operations.
- Total feed used to produce relevant protein, and associated soy content per tonne.
- Country of origin of soy and sub-national origin if available (e.g. state or municipality)
- Soy certification status.
- [FOR EU & UK SUPPLIERS ONLY] Direct soy use where requested – including supplying soy milk or other soy derived products.
1.2 Packer / Conglomerate
- Sustainable soy commitments adopted by your company for animal feed (e.g. commitment to zero-net deforestation soy by 2020, signatory to the Statement of Support for the Cerrado Manifesto)
- Soy sourcing practices by your suppliers. Data must include:
- Name of the feed supplier.
- Name of the company importing the soy to Europe (if different).
- Total tonnage of protein supplied, by type of protein.
- Total feed used to produce relevant protein, and associated soy content per tonne.
- Country of origin of soy and sub-national origin if available (e.g. state or municipality)
- Soy certification status.
1.3 Ingredient user / Manufacturer
- Sustainable soy commitments adopted by your company for animal feed (e.g. commitment to zero-net deforestation soy by 2020, signatory to the Statement of Support for the Cerrado Manifesto)
- Product list supplied to retailer, manufacturer or hospitality company and supplied protein volumes including the customer product reference number.
- Supplier list per protein supplied to each Amazon business unit.
There are hundreds of farms that supply us. How should I get this feed information?
You should sample your suppliers to determine what their sourcing practices are for soy in feed. The specific number to be sampled should be agreed between 3Keel and your company to be practical within the timeframe of the questionnaire and the feasibility of collecting the information (if not known).
Do I provide details for my whole business?
Only provide data for the products that are supplied to the named companies and markets in the declaration. If you supply multiple markets/Amazon business units (e.g. UK, EU), then you must separately declare each market.
No information should be supplied for manufacturing sites or livestock that are not supplied to the named companies and markets. If you are not able to split out your feed or soy information between companies, contact 3Keel and they will be able to develop a solution with you.
What are the information boundaries we should use for determining volumes?
All data is to be provided for retailer own-brand livestock/soy-based products supplied between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2022. The data is relevant only to the named companies and markets and should not relate to your overall company procurement practices.
We have multiple sites within our group producing livestock or livestock-based products. How should we report these figures?
You should only return one form to us covering all your relevant sites and operations. Where multiple persons may be reporting information, you may use the declaration internally to collect data from various parts of the business, but this information should then be consolidated into a single final form that you then send to 3Keel.
Are other retailers asking for this information?
Many other retailers, particularly across the European Union and UK, are also requesting this information from their suppliers. Due to public commitments across the retail industry for Deforestation and Conversion Free soy, including through groups such as the CGF Forest Positive Coalition and the UK Soy Manifesto, many companies have been asking their suppliers of meat, fish, dairy and processed products to report on soy for multiple years.
Amazon are aligning with the industry on the scope of products that are included within this reporting, covering fresh animal-based products (e.g. meat, dairy, eggs), animal-based products used as ingredients in processed products, and soy-based products (e.g. soy milk and tofu).
For examples of other retailers who are requesting this information, you can see the report on soy use in the European retail industry here.
For Amazon Fresh in the EU and UK, we are going further than some others in also asking for some information on some soy-based ingredients used within our products. There are other retailers also asking for this data, though not all, and we feel this is important for us to understand the indirect risks posed to the Amazon supply chain by the upcoming EU Deforestation Regulation.
I’ve already submitted data for other retailers through the 3Keel process. Can any of this data be used for this Amazon submission?
If you have already submitted a response for the FY 2022 through the 3Keel portal for any other customer (e.g. retailer, hospitality/food service company, manufacturer) then this will reduce the steps you will need to take in your submission.
You can use the same login you have used for other 3Keel reporting processes in the past, and your profile will already be complete. The ‘Company policy’ section of your submission (which is a reflection of your business’ approach and policies overall, and not customer specific) will show the answers you provided previously. You will just need to confirm that these are still correct by hitting the ‘submit’ button, and then provide your Amazon specific numbers for your 2022 supply.
If you would like to chat with 3Keel about anything else we can do to make this even more efficient for you (e.g. using company-level standard feed conversion ratios or supplier samples), please get in touch with the team directly on soy@3keel.com.
I haven’t supplied any own brand products containing animal proteins or soy. Why are you contacting me?
If you have not supplied any of our own brand products that contain livestock-based products or soy – neither as a raw material nor an ingredient – please declare to 3Keel that you are out of scope for this exercise. No further action will be required once you have made this declaration.
When will we ultimately need to respond with information?
A link to an online submission portal will be sent to you on 9th May 2023. This will give you access to the relevant declaration form, which must be returned to 3Keel by 9th June 2023.
Will there be any guidance on how to complete the declaration?
A webinar will be broadcast to introduce the submission portal and provide an overview on how to complete your declaration. Ample time will be available during this session to answer any questions you have. The webinar will be recorded and made available to you via a web link sent after the event should you be unable to attend, and will also be available on the submission portal homepage.
Please sign up below:
Guidance will also be provided on the online form for each data point that is requested in addition to a ‘live chat’ function to speak directly with the 3Keel team.
How do I access the submission portal?
The declaration form and supporting evidence will be completed and submitted through a web-based portal. You will receive a link over email to access the portal. Where you have reported information through 3Keel previously, we will pre-populate this data in your secure part of the system that is linked to a named individual / email address. If you are not the correct contact for reporting, please let us know and we will make the appropriate adjustment.
In order to log into the portal for the first time, you will need to reset your password. You can do this by clicking on the “forgot my password” link on the portal login screen. Then just enter your email address. If you do not receive a password reset link within half an hour, please get in touch with the 3Keel on Soy@3Keel.com.
Please note: the password reset email is an auto-generated email from the submission portal, so please check your junk folder.
How long will the declaration take to complete?
This is dependent on the amount of information you have on the soy/animal-based products/ingredients you supply to Amazon. However, the form itself should only take minutes to complete if you have the data and evidence needed to hand. The majority of the time that will be needed from your business will be to collect this information from your relevant colleagues and suppliers. We would encourage you to do this as early as possible.
If you have already collected all of the relevant information on your products (listed under FAQ 1), the ingredient user/manufacturer form should take only a few minutes to complete (depending on the number of types of product/ingredient you supply and the number of suppliers you have).
If you have far more detail on the soy within animal feed being used in your supply chain, the online form should still only take a few minutes, but you will need to enter a form per protein type (e.g. separate forms for pork and chicken) and for different suppliers/importers/certification types being declared.
We will be running through a full end-to-end submission for both of the types mentioned above as part of the introductory webinar, so we would strongly encourage you to attend/watch this on demand on the submission portal page to see exactly what you will need to fill out.
If you are at all concerned about how long this information will take for you to enter into the submission portal, please do get in touch with 3Keel on soy@3keel.com. We are aiming to make this as easy for you as possible, so can discuss possible alternative options with you if needed.
I am having problems completing my declaration / uploading my evidence, what should I do?
If you’re having any difficulties with the online portal, you can get in touch with the 3Keel team via the live chat option at the bottom corner of the submission portal page. Just click on the speech bubble icon and type your question.
If you ask a question within UK office hours, a member of the 3Keel team will pick this up within a few minutes. If it is outside of these hours, or there is no one available to answer your question, you will be given the option to enter your email address so that someone can get back to you as soon as possible.
What is a “livestock-based” product?
Direct animal proteins – such as beef, pork, chicken – and products that use such animals in their production – such as chicken korma ready meals – are all considered livestock products. “Livestock-based” products include these proteins and extend the categorisation to other products that come from livestock (e.g. milk and eggs).
Do I need to include all livestock-based products?
This will depend on which Amazon business units you supply according to the specific scope of their requirements.
For example, for Amazon Fresh Private Brands North America and Whole Foods Market this year you will only need to report whole animal protein livestock products (e.g. chicken breasts, steak, mince, salmon, prawns, eggs, milk, cheese). However, Amazon Fresh Private Brands EU and UK also require you to report on products containing animal protein ingredients (e.g. chicken in a ready meal, fish in a pie, meat on a pizza, cheese in a sandwich, egg in a salad) and soy used as an ingredient.
This, however, excludes proteins that are embodied in other purchased compound food products (e.g. milk chocolate in a cookie). Minor ingredients (e.g. butter in pie crust in a dessert) should be discussed with 3Keel to determine whether or not they are in scope for the company you are reporting to.
Who do I contact if I have questions regarding the survey and information required?

Wholefoods: Amy Walker, Amy.walker@wholefoods.com
What happens if our soy is deemed to be at risk or not deforestation free?
Information on the status of the soy used in your company’s supply chain will be reported back to Amazon/WFM by 3Keel, who will compare results with the the grocery industry and soy market.
Amazon/WFM will then be in touch in Q3/Q4 of 2023 with suppliers where their current position or commitments are not in line with Amazon’s deforestation commitments to discuss expectations and next steps. These will vary depending on the business unit you are supplying.
